07/Jan/2005 The Accident

Two truck drivers died in an accident on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike just before midnight Monday, state police reported.

The accident, which occurred in Lower Milford Township in Lehigh County, closed the northbound lanes from the Quakertown exit to the Allentown exit until about 6 a.m. today.

A tractor trailer had become disabled and stopped in the northbound right lane, police said, when it was rear-ended by another tractor trailer.

The driver of the disabled truck was identified by state police as Lyle Durham, 68, of Fulton, N.Y. The identity of the second driver was withheld, pending notification of next of kin. Police did not release the names of their companies.

The tractor of the first unit was parked on the shoulder, state police said, but its trailer was still on the road. The reason that the unit had become disabled was unknown.

Police said the second tractor trailer hit the left rear of the stopped trailer, pushing it onto the embankment, where the stopped tractor caught fire.

The second tractor wound up on the embankment, but its two trailers remained on the road.

Southbound traffic was diverted at the Allentown exit until the southbound lanes were reopened at 3 a.m. today. Contact staff writer Walter F. Naedele at 215-345-7768 or at wnaedele@phillynews.com.

About Perry Mitchell

It is with great regret for me to state that my brother was killed in a truck accident along the NE Corridor of the Turnpike in PA, last night.

He was my "little bro" -- 6 years younger. And the accident has no meaning.

He was driving a Fed Ex semi when another truck that had broken down in the same lane was in his way. He could not react in time and slammed into it, causing that truck -- and subsequently his own -- to burst into flames.

Something is definitely wrong with the universe. It was "not his time". He was only 37 years old, and has a wife a 3 kids. He was a good guy, who always looked up to his older bro. He had always wanted me to teach him how to program computers and what not.

Kinda wish I had, since he'd still be alive right now. But who knows these things?

An interesting question is how do atheists handle bereavement. Well, we handle it. My father died a few years ago, and now my brother dies.

What the fuck? You handle it.

I consider myself at one with the Universe, which, believe it or not, provides some comfort. Yet, it still hurts. He was my younger brother, after all.

My only regret is -- well, I have lots of regrets. This was not obviously expected.

So perhaps I'll pick a star and name it after my little bro.

Recently, 150,000 were killed by the tsunami. I mourned their deaths. But somehow the death of a single one -- my own brother -- looms much larger in my mind than millions of humans I do not know.

May not be logical, but it is -- human, I suppose.

I love the Universe, but it can be a cruel motherfucker sometimes.

About Me

I am Fred Mitchell, Perry's older brother. Perry was a good guy, he did not deserve to die. I will remember him always, the information that was my brother's consciousness now lost to the ebbs and flows of the quantum backwaters of the cosmic universe.
